EPISODE 1

Tofino

Watch NOW

“Half the Pace, But Twice the Quality”. Welcome to Vancouver Island’s crown jewel.

Tofino is the first stop on Jon’s tour, and for good reason. If you’re looking to RV and camp beachside, Tofino is the place to be. Jon learns about surf culture with the owner Aftanas surf, then tries it out for himself with lessons from the legendary women-led surf school, Surf Sister. En route to Tofino, it’s easy to skip the tiny, quaint town of Ucluelet (pronounced yew-kloo-let or just “Ukee” as locals call it). Ukee has all that wild west-coast charm without the bustling crowds. Jon sits down with Brewmaster Allan from the local-loved Ucluelet Brewing Co. to chat about the importance of community and providing world-class beer.

Ucluelet Brewing Co.

What makes Ucluelet Brewing Co. unique? Well, the building itself – a converted church from the 50’s that’s home to a new, just as passionate congregation, and the town of Ukee, in which it resides. The experience of drinking a beer that has been brewed in-house – in a defunct church – while enjoying a view of the ocean and mountains is a pretty unique way to capture the true essence of the west coast vibe.

Found my congregation

“Even though it’s close to home, traveling to Tofino builds up a thirst”.

“Sipping world-class beer on the edge of Vancouver Island, I couldn’t think of a better spot to start off my cross country tour and explore the beers all across this land of ours. Allan, Brewmaster at Ucluelet Brewing Co., shares why the nature drenched town of Ukee is such a special place, and what makes the towns only micro-brewery so unique.”

Met a surfboard shaper

Visited the one who rules the waves

“I checked out the incredibly popular surfboard shop, Aftanas, to find out how Tofino’s supernatural beauty inspires Stefan to create and shape surfboards. Learning about the parallels of the flow state in the ocean to shaping the Board itself expanded my views and made me appreciate my new “Brewdocking” surfboard, handcrafted by Stefan himself.”

Caught the waves at Cox Bay with Lessons from Surf Sister

“After learning how surfboards are made, I went to visit Krissy, owner of Surf Sister, to relearn how to hang-ten, or at least avoid as many wipeouts as possible with my new Brewdocking board I got made for me by Aftanas. The good thing about surfing, is even though it’s a difficult sport, it’s easy to have fun right away.”
